FAQ

01

How should MyOngaku be used to best support home practice?

MyOngaku can be used in many different ways to support home practice. The app helps you understand if your child is practicing correctly and where they need to improve. The app helps your child develop their skill by practicing slowly, starting with short sections of music, and focusing on the key learning points of each piece. Your child should listen closely as they watch the video performance, then imitate how the piece sounds and how it looks. Your child can play along to sections of the piece at a slow tempo, then play along to the complete piece at an intermediate tempo. See our Practice Tips for more about how to use the app.  Back to top.

02

Is MyOngaku useful for parents who are musicians themselves?

Yes, we think so. While you have the benefit of your own knowledge and training that will help you guide your child’s practice, the app provides your child independence in the learning process for new pieces as well as when reviewing pieces they have already learned. You can structure your child’s practice using the app with the confidence that they have a reference tool to help them achieve proper rhythms, notes and bowings. See our Practice Tips for ideas on how to use the app.  Back to top.

03

How does MyOngaku differ from instructional videos available elsewhere?

Unlike many instructional videos for learning an instrument, MyOngaku is not intended to teach a student how to play. We believe a good teacher is essential to student learning and skill development. MyOngaku is specifically designed as a practice tool to provide students both a visual and auditory reference aide that will help them to learn specific pieces of music and to master instrument basics. MyOngaku has a number of unique features when compared to other instructional videos, including demonstrations by three accomplished musicians at varying speeds, synchronized front and finger views, key learning points, and note-by-note guidance. The innovative visual recognition feature also allows students to use their tablet or smart phone to view video content simply by pointing the camera of their device at their sheet music, providing students on-demand access to the specific content they need at the moment they need it.  Back to top.

04

How do I download and purchase MyOngaku?

MyOngaku may be downloaded for free from the App Store. There are currently two app versions -- Volume 1 and Volume 2. Each app version includes sample video content that will allow you to try the app for free before purchasing the complete set of video content. The complete content may be purchased and downloaded from the App Store via an in-app purchase.  Back to top.

05

How much does MyOngaku cost, and can I try it before purchasing?

The MyOngaku price will vary based on your App Store currency. The apps may be downloaded for free from the App Store. The apps include sample video content that will allow you to try the apps for free. The complete content may then be purchased and downloaded from the App Store via an in-app purchase. Just tap on the "Get Content" button that appears when you are in the camera view and a "Buy Now" screen will appear with the in-app purchase price. Tap on the price button to purchase the complete content using your Apple App Store account.  Back to top.

What devices work with MyOngaku?

MyOngaku works on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. We do our best to keep the app up-to-date with the latest technology; therefore, as technology advances, the apps may not work as well on older versions of these devices. If you have a choice between devices, we recommend using the apps on the iPad because the larger screen allows for a better viewing experience.  Back to top.

07

Is MyOngaku available for Android devices?

We do not currently have a version of MyOngaku that is designed for Android devices. If you are interested in finding out more about future plans, sign up for our product news and we will keep you informed about new releases.  Back to top.

08

How much device storage space is needed to download MyOngaku?

The app size upon initial download from the App Store is 128.1 MB. The in-app purchase of the complete content requires an additional 747.5 MB of space. Therefore, the total app size including the complete content is 875.6 MB. Please note that you may need more free space on your device than the size of the app to successfully complete the download process. In some cases, this could be double the app size. After the app has downloaded successfully, it will only use space equal to its size.  Back to top.

09

How do I free up storage space on my device?

To view the amount of storage space used and available on your iPad or iPhone: Tap on Settings > General > Usage. From Usage, tap on Manage Storage to see the amount of space different types of content are taking on your device. Based on this information, you may decide you can delete content you are not using. Remember, anything you have not backed up onto a computer or in iCloud will be deleted forever, although any content you have purchased from iTunes can be restored at any point. For more information about apps installed on your device, you can tap on the relevant app icon from Manage Storage. You may delete the app if you no longer need to use it by pressing the delete button. Depending on the app, you may also be able to delete some of the app content so that the app uses less space. You can also manage your device content through iTunes. If you connect your device to your computer (either via USB or over Wi-Fi) and select it from the device button in iTunes, you can view a chart along the bottom of the screen that details your device storage by content type (Audio, Video, Photos, Books, etc.). You can remove content completely or you can transfer content from your device to your computer. You can restore the content you have transfered to your computer later by re-syncing it to your device. For more information about how to free up storage space on your iPad or iPhone, visit the support section of the Apple website. Back to top.

10

How long does the complete MyOngaku content take to download?

Download time can vary significantly dependent on the strength and speed of your Internet connection. For this reason, we recommend that you ensure you have a good Internet connection at the time you make your in-app purchase and download the complete content. The complete MyOngaku content includes over 500 videos, so you should expect that it will take at least 10 minutes to finish the content download, but it could take longer depending on your Internet connection. Back to top.

11

What do I do if the app or the complete content will not download?

Our app content includes a large number of high quality videos. We hold the videos in the app to provide the best possible experience without the limitations of streaming data. Before beginning the download, please check the available storage space on your device to ensure there is sufficient space for the app content. You may need more space on your device than the size of the app to complete the download. In some cases, this could be double the app size. After the app has downloaded successfully, it will only use space equal to its size.  Back to top.

12

What do I do if I am experiencing problems playing the videos?

If you have a sound problem, first check that the volume on your device is turned up and that the mute switch on the side of the device is not turned on.

If you continue to have sound problems or if you are experiencing other problems playing or watching the videos, try rebooting the device by holding down the power button and then “slide to power off.” A large majority of problems experienced with applications can be resolved by this simple reboot.

If re-booting does not fix your problem, then try removing the app completely from your device and reinstalling it. MyOngaku is a large application and can be corrupted if the download process is interrupted in some way. To uninstall and reinstall the app:

  • Delete the application both from the device and from iTunes.

  • Backup and sync the device.

  • Download the application and the content again. From the in-app purchase screen, tap either the price button or the Restore Purchase link. Apple has record of your purchases, and you will not be charged twice. If you have had problems downloading the app directly to your device, try downloading it to iTunes. Similarly, if you have had issues with your Internet connection and iTunes, try downloading the app directly to your device using a Wi-Fi connection.

If reinstalling does not solve the problem and you are using a device or Internet connection that has security settings controlled by an IT department, you should contact your IT administrator to ensure that there are no security settings that might have interfered with the successful download or use of the app.

If none of these actions solves the problem, there may be a need to restore your device to factory settings. Information about how to do this can be found on the Apple website.  Back to top.

How do I use the app visual recognition?

When you open the app, it will already be in camera mode (you should see that anything in front of your device camera is showing up within the screen view in the same way that it does when you have activated the camera of your device to take a picture). Simply place your sheet music page in front of the device camera like you are going to take a picture of it, positioning it so that the page fills the screen. The camera will automatically scan the page, and the app will immediately recognize the page scanned. You will hear a chime and see a check mark, indicating the page has been recognized. The page image will then appear on your screen with circular MyOngaku ("MyO") icons overlaid upon it, each representing a music selection. Tap an MyO icon to play a video. When you are ready to scan a new page of music, simply tap on the camera icon at the top left of your screen to return to camera mode.  Back to top.

Can I use the app if the camera of my device is not working?

Yes, you can access the videos via a manual selection menu. This manual selection menu is found in the upper left corner of your device screen when you are in the app camera view. The menu icon is represented by three straight horizontal lines. When you tap the icon, you will see a scrollable drop-down list of the music selections available. When you tap on a specific music selection, you will see the blurred sheet music page image for that selection and will be able to access the video content by tapping on the circular "MyO" icons that correspond to the specific line or piece of music that you would like to view. You may view all MyOngaku content (either the free sample content or the complete content if purchased) by using the manual selection menu. Please note that, unless you have previously scanned one of the Suzuki book pages, the sheet music images will be blurred when you use the manual selection method to access the content.  Back to top.

17

What if I am having problems scanning my sheet music?

First, please ensure that you are scanning an approved Suzuki® publication.

MyOngaku - Violin Volume 1 is designed to work with:

Suzuki Violin School, Volume 1, Violin Part, Revised Edition

  • ISBN 13: 978-0-7390-4811-5 / ISBN 10: 0-7390-4811-2

  • ISBN 13: 978-0-7579-0061-7 / ISBN 10: 0-7579-0061-5

MyOngaku - Violin Volume 2 is designed to work with:

Suzuki Violin School, Volume 2, Violin Part, Revised Edition

  • ISBN 13: 978-0-7390-4812-2 / ISBN 10: 0-7390-4812-0

  • ISBN 13: 978-0-7390-4814-6 / ISBN 10: 0-7390-4814-7

Also, check that your device camera is working properly and that you have given the MyOngaku app access to your camera in your device Settings. To do this, go to Settings on your device. Within Settings, scroll down to the section that lists all of the apps loaded on your device. Tap on MyOngaku to view the permissions settings for our app. You will want to ensure that the permissions setting that allows MyOngaku access to your iPad camera is turned on.

Please be aware that the visual recognition may not work in inconsistent light or if part of the page you are scanning is obscured. When scanning, you should hold your device so that the full page of your sheet music fills the screen.

If you are using a device or Internet connection that has security settings controlled by an IT department, you should contact your IT administrator to ensure that there are no security settings that might have interfered with the successful download or use of the app.

If the camera of your device is not working properly or you continue to have difficulties scanning your sheet music, you may access video content by using the MyOngaku manual selection menu as an alternative to scanning your Suzuki sheet music page.

18

Is there a way to return to the last scanned page without re-scanning it?

Yes, when in camera mode, there will be an icon at the top of your device screen that is a “page-and-clock” image. This icon represents your last viewed sheet music page. When you tap on the icon, the last page of music you viewed will reappear. Therefore, once you have scanned a piece of music you are working on, you can return to it again the next time you practice by tapping this button rather than re-scanning the page.  Back to top.

19

What is the difference between the solid and the white MyO icons in the sheet music display?

The solid colored icon videos demonstrate a complete piece or exercise being played at an intermediate tempo. The white icon videos demonstrate a section of music or exercise being played at a slow tempo. When learning a piece, we recommend that you start with the white icons. Your child can listen and watch, and then play along to sections of the piece at a slow tempo. When they have mastered each section, they can then play along to the complete piece at an intermediate tempo.  Back to top.

20

How do I select a performer?

The first time that you are in the sheet music view and you tap on a MyO icon to play a video, you will need to first select from among three performers. You will automatically be presented with the image and bio of one of the performers. Tap on the "read more" or the arrow icon to read the full performer bio. Tap on the arrow icon to return from the full bio back to the performer image. Swipe your screen to the left to view another performer (and swipe to the right to go back to a previous performer). Select the performer whose videos you want to watch by tapping "Select" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. A check mark will appear in this location for the selected performer. To close the performer window, tap on the X in the upper left hand corner. The colour of the MyO icons on the sheet music page will change (green, orange or blue) based on the performer that is selected. Once you have selected a performer, this will remain your default performer until you change your selection. When in sheet music view, the image of your selected performer will be shown in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  Tapping the selected performer's image will again open the performer window where you can view the images/bios of all performers and change your selected performer. You can also switch performers when viewing a video in half-screen view simply by tapping the performer button below the video screen. The coloured button represents the performer that is currently selected. Back to top.

21

How do I select and play a video?

Each circle MyO icon on the sheet music page corresponds to a video. The white MyO icons represent sections of music, and the solid coloured MyO icons represent complete pieces of music. Tap an icon and the video will play in a vertical, half-screen view. The sheet music for the chosen music selection will be visible and scrollable in the half-screen view above the video. To view a video horizontally in a full screen view, simply turn your device horizontally and the video view will automatically change. To see and use the video controls (e.g. pause, play, etc.), touch the video screen. The controls will disappear if the screen is left untouched. To place a video on auto-repeat, tap the rectangular arrow icon in the upper right corner of the video when in half-screen view. To close a video and return to the sheet music view, tap the X (in half-screen view) or Done (in full screen view).  Back to top.

22

What are the colored stickers on the violin fingerboard?

These stickers are violin-fingering tape that is used as a temporary aide for beginning violin students to mark where to place fingers on the violin fingerboard. In the MyOngaku videos, the tape marks the placement of the 1st finger, high 2nd finger, and third finger. When using fingering tape, it is important to note that although fingering tape provides the approximate location of finger placement, playing in tune requires the violinist to always listen carefully to ensure they are playing at the correct pitch.  Back to top.

23

How do I read the note-by-note annotations in the lower right-hand corner of the videos?

The name of the note being played is written in black. The fingering (finger and string) is written in blue. For example: E – 0 on E is an open (no fingers) E string; C# - 2 on A is second finger on the A string. For a better understanding of violin fingering, see our violin fingerboard chart.  Back to top.

24

Is there a way to place the video on automatic repeat?

Yes, to place a video on automatic repeat, tap the rectangular arrow icon in the upper right corner of the video when your device is vertical and you are in the half-screen video view. If you want to view full-screen, turn your device horizontally once you have tapped on the repeat icon. The video will repeat until you tap the repeat icon again. The icon background is blue when the repeat function is on.  Back to top.

25

Will MyOngaku be available for other Suzuki® violin sheet music volumes and Suzuki instruments?

Yes, we are working on making MyOngaku available for other Suzuki violin volumes and Suzuki instruments. Sign up for our product news to receive emails about new releases. Back to top.

26

Does the app replace a Suzuki® violin teacher?

No, MyOngaku is not intended to teach a student how to play. We believe a Suzuki teacher is essential to student learning and skill development. MyOngaku is a tool to provide students both a visual and auditory reference aide during home practice sessions when they are away from their teacher’s direct guidance.  Back to top.

27

Does the app replace the need for the Suzuki® sheet music or CD?

No, the Suzuki sheet music and CD are essential to a student’s learning and development. The app is designed to work with the sheet music, and we highly recommend using the Suzuki CD to listen to the pieces in the original tempo before using the MyOngaku app. The demonstrations within the app are played at slower tempos to aid student learning. Once students have mastered the music, they should play at the tempo of the Suzuki CD. Back to top.
